Farming Methods
Cover Crops
Cover crops “cover” the soil, preventing erosion, providing beneficial shade, nutrients, and moisture for soil organisms, and enriching soil fertility and soil structure through added nutrients and aggregate formation. Instead of depleting soil fertility, cover crops enrich it, adding biomass as they are tilled back into the soil upon maturity.
In winter, we cover crop in clover, rye grass, winter wheat, and hairy vetch, while our summer cover crops are sunflowers, iron and clay peas, sudan grass, and buckwheat.
Hoop House
This high tunnel hoop house allows us to extend the growing season of some of our more delicate crops, protecting them from frost and capturing up to 5 degrees more heat than the outdoors. Using only the passive heat from the sun, the hoop house enables us to start strawberries early, and allows us to extend the growing season of basil and tender arugula through January.
